jason morris, industrial design instructor at western washington university has posted a very nice video on form development work of some of his students.

starting with abstract exercises with a focus on proportions, gesture, and composition, the pieces are then developed into functional objects, while maintaining their core form elements.

(i only wish he would have chosen some slightly different music …)

reminded me of course of pratt’s industrial design 3d program that i went through (and still appreciate very much). and it turned out jason also received his master’s from there …

this approach is based on rowena reed kostellow, a teacher at pratt for many years, and the exercises she developed. an overview of this approach can be found in the book ‘elements of design‘.
